Tipton Rapid Deluxe Bore Guide Kit

The patch is placed in front of the “patch plug” or ram (above). Ram has pushed the patch into the solvent port
where solvent is added with a pipette (below).

Maybe wisdom comes with age, but after cleaning a zillion firearms with scores of products, I’ve been trying to distance myself from skin contact with the witches’ brews I swab down those dirty bores. First came 3-mil Nitrile gloves purchased from Harbor Freight every time they went on sale. More recently, I’ve added a Tipton product to my rifle cleaning regime that, at first glance, seemed gimmicky to me, but upon using it, I have to admit there’s some genius behind the design.

The Tipton Rapid Deluxe Bore Guide Kit is a mouthful, but it accomplishes a thing or two other bore guides do not.

It’s a conventional bore guide and contains a push/pull ram, called the “patch plug” to both center and seat the patch in a solvent port. Once secured in the solvent port, the patch is soaked with solvent using one of the chemical grade pipettes contained in the kit. Centered and lightly secured in the bore guide, the solvent-carrying patch can now be pushed through the bore with a conventional cleaning rod fitted with a spear tip.

The results? Your hands do not come in contact with either cleaning solvents or preservatives using the system. The rifle action is protected from solvents and preservatives, and the system is fairly universal in its application with centerfire, bolt-action rifles.

Contained in the kit are three interchangeable, chamber bore tips covering calibers from .17 to .460, two main-body aluminum guide tubes of different lengths, a bolt body guide with a diameter of 0.69 inch, an AR-15 collar fitting inside the receiver of an AR, three brass muzzle guides for calibers .22, .27 and up, two pipettes, an excellent set of instructions and a storage case. Add one of Tipton’s great, carbon fiber cleaning rods, and you’re really in business.

A couple of observations. I would not recommend the system for those wee, little .17 caliber cleaning patches. Use a simple, straight, bore guide for the .17 calibers. I added a tapered, brass muzzle guide to the rear of the push/pull, patch plug to better center and align the cleaning rod.

With all its pieces and parts it looks gimmicky, but it really does an excellent job of removing you from contact with cleaning chemicals. Priced at $32.99, it’s a good buy.
