Ruger On The Edge

The Powder Keg Is
A Blast In The Hand

By Pat Covert

Branded knives from gun manufacturers run the gamut in quality depending on who writes the prescription. When famed gun manufacturer Ruger Firearms turned to Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT) to produce their new knife line, they not only teamed up with a respected name to design and manufacturer their knives, they hooked up with a company who knows what the public wants. Oregon-based CRKT made their name offering the knife-using public high-quality affordable knives and, yes, they do produce offshore but their knowledgeable expertise at doing so has brought them tremendous success.

The Ruger Powder Keg featured here is a collaboration between the Ruger/CRKT team and Ryan Johnson of RMJ Tactical. A goodly-sized fixed blade, the Powder Keg checks in at 9.50 inches in overall length with roughly half of that in a comfortable handle sporting 2-tone tan and black handle scales and an inset Ruger medallion. The 4.625-inch blade (3/16 inches thick) is a robust, Bowie-esque clip-point style with a non-reflective stonewashed finish. A Ruger logo branded tan leather belt sheath is included.

The Powder Keg is a “cross-over cutter”—one equally suited for both field chores and tactical purposes. For camp chores the Powder Keg can handle heavy-duty tasks like shelter building and game processing. For extended use you’ll find the rubberized grip much more forgiving than a hard synthetic, and the double-slotted belt sheath keeps the knife handy and at the ready. True to CRKT form, the Powder Keg is nicely priced leaving you coin left over for fun things like ammunition!
