Mono Madness!

Benchmade’s Ti Monolock May Just Be The S
toried Firm’s Finest Knife. Ever.

By Pat Covert

Benchmade Knives is known for producing some very fine folders. They may cost a bit more, but they’re manufactured right here in their domestic facilities. The Ti Monolock Model 761 exceeds all expectations in comparison to its brethren. Let me explain. This is a Benchmade Blue Class folder. There are two classes above Blue in the company line: Black and Gold. Black is high-end. Gold knives are tricked out crème de la crème fare, often highly upgraded versions of their other knives. To put things in perspective, if the Ti Monolock ever gets boosted to a Gold version (which it certainly deserves) it will be lights out.

The Ti Monolock is 8.60 inches fully opened and features a 3.73-inch double-ground M390 stainless steel drop-point blade. M390 is a clean, premium powder metallurgy steel used in fine surgical cutting instruments with a high Chromium content, which makes it very corrosion resistant. The knife’s Titanium frame—a huge drawing card—is exquisitely designed and sculpted to perfection. A Chris Reeve-style mono-lock mechanism (often referred to as an integral or frame-lock) on the back frame slab makes for rock solid lock-up, and there’s a machined offset pocket clip worthy of a prize on its own.

The Ti Monolock is, in a nutshell, the complete package. Everything about this folding knife speaks of finery. Nothing was overlooked in it materials, fabrication, and finishes. It will be interesting to see if Benchmade takes it up to Gold level with perhaps multi-color anodizing and a duo-tone, bead-blasted blade (but it’s a stunner as it is). Such domestic-made finery doesn’t come cheap, but it’s right in line with similar Titanium integral lock folders and well worth considering as your next upscale everyday carry.
