Gents For The Hunt

A.G. Russell Fields A Tasty
Trio Of Gents Hunter II Folders

By Pat Covert

Longtime cutlery purveyor A.G. Russell is a legend in knife circles for his years of success as a mail order giant. Oft overlooked is Russell’s knack for design—a talent he perfected over years of handling and selling knives. The A.G. Russell Folding Gents Hunter II series is a prime example of his expertise at such, and also demonstrates his ability to draw on the past and bring it up to modern day standards.

Russell’s Gents Hunter II folders incorporate two throwback features seasoned knife users will appreciate. First, these are lockback styles in which the blade is disengaged by pressing a spring bar located in a detente on the base of the handle. It’s a cleaner design than a lot of the newer mechanisms and many like the fact you can see the lock as opposed to searching for it inside the frame. Secondly, there’s a nice-sized nail nick in the blade for engagement. Once again, it’s a cleaner look and more apropos for a lockback. The Gents Hunter II blade is a drop-point style, preferred by a whole lot of hunters for skinning game, and the steel is easy to maintain 9Cr13CoMoV stainless. The nicely curved frame has stainless liners as well and a choice of three scale materials: Carbon Fiber, Cocobolo and Hunter Green G10. A deep, pocket clip keeps the folder at the ready.

At 4.4 inches closed the Gents Hunter II is a mid-size folder just as comfortable for everyday carry as it is in the field. The trim cross section conceals easily with a low signature and at 3.2 ounces won’t be pulling your britches down. The handle is comfortable with a nice palm swell. The choice of handle scales includes two modern day synthetics—Carbon Fiber and G10 or you can go old school with the warmth and richness of Cocobolo wood. The price range is an affordable $85 to $145 depending on which scale you choose. Lockback lovers, start your engines!
