Triple-Laminate Steel Makes Bob Dozier’s Sisu Skinner Special
“Sisu” is a Finnish word meaning exemplary courage beyond the pale. Arkansas knifemaker Bob Dozier is widely known for making hard-use knives, so the word Sisu fits quite well. Bob’s Sisu line draws on the Scandinavian influence in more ways than just a name, however. Dozier uses triple-laminate steel in the blades and the styling is very reminiscent of the legendary Morseth knives of old, which Dozier replicated for cutlery giant A.G. Russell by the thousands over two decades ago. Bob offers his Sisu knives in four different models: the Skinner Model 8 shown here, Model 7 Spear Point, Model 1 Drop Point and Model 5 Clip Point.
The hidden tang Sisu Skinner has a 4.0-inch blade of triple-laminate steel consisting of a D2 high carbon steel inner core with two outer layers of 410C stainless steel. The D2, Dozier’s favorite knife steel, gives the knife excellent cutting characteristics while the stainless steel outers offer added strength and corrosion resistance. The handle can be had in a wide variety of materials and configurations and Bob never does the same twice—so you are getting a one-off custom. The Skinner model pictured here has a brass guard (common to all Sisu knives) and a Stag handle with red and black Micarta plus brass spacers. A Dozier handmade, welted, top-grain saddle leather belt sheath with securing loop is included.
Who says they don’t make them like they used to? Bob’s Sisu fixed-blades are well made and tough as nails with a pedigree for hard use Dozier has earned in over 50 years of knifemaking. He also offers custom-made leather gun belts crafted to your specifications. The Sisu Skinner starts at $450 and price depends on handle materials. Dozier’s Sisu knives are built to last for generations and hard use beyond the pale, just like their namesake.
