Big Bad Bushman

Battle Horse Knives Supersizes
One Of Their Most Popular Models

By Pat Covert

There’s somewhat of a misconception about Bushcraft knives. Some believe they are for working wood only when, in fact, many Bushcrafters are hunters and trappers. Battle Horse Knives (BHK) offers the basic scandi grind many Bushcrafters prefer for wood crafting, but they also offer the more versatile saber grind which is excellent for processing game and heavy-duty field chores to boot. The original BHK Bushcrafter has long been a staple in their stable of outdoor knives. The Bushman model you see here is a super-sized version of the Bushcrafter.

The Bushman is a 10.5-inch cutting machine. The O1 high-carbon-steel blade on the Bushman sports a saber grind on its 5.0 inches of cutting edge. The Bushman’s blade steel is a beefy 0.1875 (3/16) inches thick and its ample 5.25-inch handle can accommodate the biggest of mitts. The handle scales on all standard BHK knives are a variety of canvas micarta colors in either a sanded or polished finish. Our review sample came in a natural amber color in a polished finish with brass/steel pins and a lanyard loop at the base. In addition to the scandi and saber grinds, BHK also offers their knives in a full V-grind. All come with a double-stitched and welted brown-leather sheath which can be upgraded with firesteel and/or drop loops if desired. Kydex is also available.

The Battle Horse Bushman is best described as a camp knife: one large enough to serve as a shelter builder, hard-core field tasker and butchering. Many survivalists choose this size knife if they only have one option. The Bushman also excels at batoning (splitting firewood using a baton to drive the blade as a wedge). Suggested retail for this heavy-duty workhorse is $250, well worth the price considering its size, craftsmanship and capabilities.
