This New Spyderco Reflects A Growing Trend
In Cutlery To Cleaver-Style Blades.

By Pat Covert

We’d be remiss if we didn’t keep you up on the hottest trends in knives. Follow the cutlery pages on Facebook and you’ll see small fixed-blade and folding cleaver-based knives popping up everywhere. Spyderco has never been a company to run from a trend and it’s part of what keeps them cool with the younger set. Their entrée into the Cleaver Fever Movement is a collaboration by Serge Panchenko, a hot custom knifemaker who immigrated to the US from Ukraine when he was 8 years old.

The Roc features a curvaceous handle with textured G10 scales, making for an comfortable, sure grip. A liner-lock mechanism fabricated from thick stainless steel liners secures the blade when fully engaged. Then there’s that insane 2.75-inch blade. The Roc is not a cleaver in the chopping sense, but its deep saber grind can slice through the thickest steak or slice up sushi with ease. Blade steel is VG-10, a proven Japanese stainless steel, which holds a wicked edge. Spyderco’s patented opening “hole” does the opening chores; a wire, deep carry pocket clip keeps the Roc at the ready.

The Roc makes you think out of the box, which is a good thing. Aside from using it for gastronomical purposes, take a closer look at the blade profile. Though blunt, sorta like a “squoze” straight razor, the edge is very close to a Wharncliff, one of the most effective utility and combat blade styles out there. Can you say slash? In essence, the Roc blade is both a slicer and a slasher—which means you’ll never go to dinner without a slicer, but it can also make sure you get to your car safely. Heck, it might give you a shave in a pinch. At a suggested retail of $259.95 you get Spyderco quality and an unorthodox companion guaranteed to turn heads in the most unlikely places.
