Exclusive: Colt Mustang XSP Review, Part 1: DoubleTap Ammo

Earlier on American Handgunner, I introduced you to the Blade Tech Ultimate Concealment Holster, a great concealed carry holster for the Colt Mustang XSP. Today I want to introduce you to some of DoubleTap’s .380 ammunition from its Defense line, which — spoiler alert! — is great ammunition for the Colt Mustang XSP.

DoubleTap has enjoyed enormous success in several markets and offers this .380 ACP round for those who carry a .380 for personal defense. Note the helpful sticker on the side of the box that indicates the ballistics as tested at DoubleTap’s factory.

aIn testing, the DoubleTap .380 ACP fires a 77-grain, lead free bullet at 1,050 feet per second out of Ruger LCP or Kel-Tec P3AT pistols. The velocity increases to 1,145 feet per second out of a pistol with a 3.5” barrel. The LCP and P3AT barrels are 2.75 inches and 2.7 inches, respectively. The Colt Mustang XSP has a 2.75 inch barrel so we can reasonably expect similar velocity to the LCP and P3AT.

Note the characteristics and shape of the DoubleTap bullet. It is a hollowpoint, to be sure, but it is shaped like a full metal jacket. Whatever your thoughts or concerns about bullet velocity and expansion — more on that later — these rounds feed and eject without fail through the XSP. Other ammunition, most notably with flatter nosed bullets, tended to hang on the feed ramp. These DoubleTap .380’s, however, never hiccupped or failed to fire.

!DSC_7071Even with a mere 11.8 ounce weight and stocks that allow only a two-fingered grip, the Colt Mustang XSP handled the DoubleTap rounds very well, offering snappy but very manageable recoil. Because I never had to fuss with round feeding failures, it was easy to get used to the recoil, master it, and stay on target. Double taps with the DoubleTap ammo quickly became second nature.

Holstered and loaded, the Colt Mustang XSP seems ready for civilian concealed carry. Watch this space for Part 2 of the review.
