  D&L AR-15

Sometimes great things happen when you least expect them. I was sitting in my office minding my own business when American COP editor Dave Douglas yelled from his office, “Do you have a California-legal AR-15?” When I told him I did, he told me to bring it to the office the following day, he had an idea. Curiosity got the better of me and I dug a little deeper.

Since Dave and I are captives in the People’s Republic of Kaliforna, we can’t purchase those evil black guns the rest of the country can. We both however, own rifles purchased before the ban went into effect. The big question was, what if we wanted a different style AR rifle than the one we already had. The lower is the only serialized part, the rest was fair game.

  WILSON COMBAT
Classic .38 Super
John Taffin
  Wilson Combat

One of the standard rallying cries of the anti-gun crowd is firearms are too readily and easily accessible. Either they don’t know recent history, or they choose to ignore it, or worse, lie about it. In the 1950s and 1960s firearms were really readily and easily accessible. Locally the grocery stores, Albertson’s and M&W, had sporting goods departments where they sold guns. The local drugstore chain, Skaag’s, sold pharmaceuticals, miscellaneous household items, and, guess what? Guns.

  THE COMBAT SHOTGUN
Effective But Underutilized
Sheppard W. Kelly
  Combat Shotgun

During a recent conversation with some retired cop friends, the topic of the shotgun came up. All these individuals came into law enforcement in the early to mid ‘ ’70s; all had carried shotguns and in several instances, used them. So, why had such an effective weapon fallen from favor in the law enforcement community? Was it a lack of on target performance, weapon usability, or training? The conclusion was the shotgun’s demise resulted from a perception of ineffectiveness brought about by poor training that in turn affected the shotgun’s usability.

  BILL RUGER’S .22 PISTOL
The Red Eagle Years
Don Findley
  Ruger

Though only in business since 1949, Sturm, Ruger & Company has earned their place in history. The late William B. Ruger is admired and respected by firearms enthusiasts all over the world. Most are familiar with the Company’s products and their history. Unlike Colt and Winchester with beginnings from the 19th century, Bill Ruger’s guns were (and are) produced in our lifetime — high quality, economically priced firearms the workingman can afford. Mr. Ruger lived and died in our generation.

  SMITH & WESSON’S
Ultimate Packin’ Pistol
John Taffin
  Smith & Wesson

Smith & Wesson has a long history of introducing Magnum sixgun cartridges beginning with the original, the .357 Magnum in 1935. At the time experts said handguns could neither get any bigger nor any more powerful. Twenty years later the .44 Magnum arrived and now the experts knew we were really at the point, rather the apex, of powerful sixguns. Yes, we were on the top, and just to prove this was so S&W took a few steps off the top of the mountain in 1964 with the slightly less powerful .41 Magnum. It sure looked like the experts were finally right.

  AERIAL GUNNERY
Shooting In Three Dimensions
Barrett Tillman
  Aerial Gunnery

Air-to-air gunnery is the most difficult of all the ballistic arts. The ability to hit a fast target maneuvering in three dimensions has eluded generations of fliers, be they pilots or gunners. For anyone who has ever tried it, the initial results generally evoke a mixture of enthusiasm, enjoyment and frustration.

  TATANG:
Barong, Bowie And Beyond
Michael Janich
  Tatang knives

The more you learn about knives, the more you’ll realize they’re not — and should not — be created equal. Good knives must be tailored to the tasks for which they are intended. Just as a meat cutter should not be cutting steaks with a dagger, an outdoorsman has no business splitting kindling with a filet knife.
