Here’s A SNEAK PEEK At What’s Inside:

COVER STORY:
REMINGTON 700 XCR II
Green And Proud Of It
Richard Mann

The Winchester Model 70 is known as the “rifleman’s rifle.” It’s not my rifle, maybe I’m not really a rifleman. There’s nothing wrong with a Model 70. I’ve just never believed a bolt-action had to be control-round-feed (CRF) — what Model 70 aficionados swear is its strongest asset. I’m not alone. In his book, Selecting and Ordering a Custom Hunting Rifle, Charlie Sisk wrote, “A CRF action has never won a war. A PF (push-feed) action, the British SMLE, has.” He goes on to say, “… A company making CRF actions has never managed to stay in business very long.”

Sisk makes two good points, but I’m just a simple hillbilly that likes to hunt. Many years ago my best friend showed me a rifle to do this with. Years later, when I was assigned as a designated marksman at my police department, the same rifle worked just as well in that role. It was a Remington Model 700.

  AFRICAN BIG BORE RIFLE
The Robar Way
Dave Douglas

I had a few friends tell me, “Once you’ve hunted in Africa you’ll never want to hunt North American game again.” There are a lot of folks at Safari Club International that have made Africa their only hunting ground. Frankly, I find it hard to believe that anyone would forgo whitetail or mule deer, let alone moose, elk, caribou or even turkey, for the pleasure of a 16-hour plane ride (18 hours back), the paperwork and the hassles of a temporary firearm import into a country with oppressive gun laws, and a three or four-hour drive in a place where you can be the quarry just as easily as the wildebeest. But, I had to do it — it’s one of those things you just have to try before you die.

  DPMS RAPTR
Firepower On Patrol
Paul Markel

Changing the minds of police administrators is like trying to turn a massive super tanker. You can do it, but it takes a long time and a lot of space. It’s been nearly 25 years since a couple of determined, well-armed bad men tore up the streets of Miami and took out several FBI agents. It’s been 13 years since the North Hollywood Bank robbery, which left scores of first responders bleeding on the street. And it’s been 11 years since the horror of the Columbine High School tragedy.

  CIMARRON'S .45-75
Roosevelt's Favorite
John Taffin

Some people are collectors — I am more of what you would call an accumulator. I’ve been accumulating guns since 1956, and long before that began accumulating books. Collectors usually have a specific goal in mind — accumulators simply surround themselves with things they like. I’ve never counted the number of books I have, however, there are bookshelves in five rooms in my house. There is no doubt I have more books than the grade school library did, where I was first introduced to really good books. One book that had a profound effect on my life was The Boy’s Book of Theodore Roosevelt, first read in 1950 when I was in the sixth grade. There are now 58 other books on my shelves by or about Theodore Roosevelt.

  S&W i-BOLT
A Solid Performer
Pat Cascio

In the past, I’ve owned a couple different Smith & Wesson rifles — sorta! S&W didn’t actually manufacture those rifles, but gave their stamp of approval on ‘em by embossing the S&W logo on the guns. They were decent hunting rifles, but nothing special.

  ALL 1911
All The Time
Mark Hanten

If you carry a gun and think the 1911 is the one for you, there are a few things you should consider. The first thing I think about is, I want to stay with the same gun-type as much as possible; particularly if it’s a 1911. You see, the 1911 has this little lever on the side, which, when in the wrong position, actually keeps the gun from firing.

  NOVESKE
A Unique Carbine
Clint Smith

Every once in a while someone comes along who just makes stuff better, sometimes even better than the original. I think John Noveske and his Noveske Rifleworks fall into that category. In a recent feature article addressing Mil-Spec standards for AR15/M16/M4 weapons systems, Colt came in first place in meeting Mil-Spec standards — I would sure hope so — followed closely, by only a point or two, by Noveske Rifleworks’ products.
