Here’s A SNEAK PEEK At What’s Inside:

COVER STORY:
SIG'S NEW 226
Blackwater Tactical 9mm
Pat Cascio

It’s not often I get a brand new to the market firearm for T&E for an article. Somehow, I lucked out, with a little help from Laura Burgess, who handles the PR/Marketing for SIG Sauer (and other gun companies too). The gun I reviewed for this article is the same exact gun you’ll see on the SIG Web site and in their new 2009 catalog.

Name Change

As this article is being written, February 2009, Blackwater USA, which changed their name to Blackwater Worldwide, just went through another name change. They will now be known as “Xe” which is simply pronounced “zee.” Since the pistol has Blackwater stamped on the gun, I’m gonna call it the Blackwater SIG.

  THE RETURN OF THE GALIL
Golani SP Orter .223 Rifle
From Century Arms

Paul Markel

Throughout history there have been a number of firearms that have come and gone, often before their time. For instance, I feel the M-14 rifle never really got a fair shake as a basic infantry weapon. Historically it was adopted in 1957, but full production did not begin until 1958 with delivery to the Army and Marine Corps following.

By 1968, a scant ten years later, the M-14 was relegated to ceremonial duty as the M-16 was force fed to the troops in the field. No, I’m not trying to restart that forty year old battle. I mention it merely to make a point, many times quality engineering isn’t enough to keep a firearm in the limelight.

  DESERT TACTICAL ARMS SRS
A Radical Bullpup
John Fasano

Hadji ain’t stupid. He may be fighting to keep his country in the Stone Age, but on the battlefield, he knows the value of snipers. Our snipers. He knows the trooper climbing out of the up-armored HUMVEE carrying the long rifle bag is the one with the Barrett M107 or the M-24 sniping system — making him a high value target.

Nick Young, a hobbyist gunsmith saw the problem as well. But Nick did something about it. He found a group of talented people and started Desert Tactical Arms in Salt Lake City, Utah. DTA has succeeded in creating a novel sniper rifle system giving the shooter the ultimate in performance while keeping his visibility to a minimum.

  LEVER ACTION PH RIFLE
A First
Sam Fadala

The idea struck home while following a cow Cape buffalo bearing down on me. I couldn’t blame her. Our client had just bushwhacked her boyfriend, a particularly cantankerous fellow having recently knocked over a small car and threatened the tranquility of nearby villagers innocently seeking a ration of water. A .416 Remington Magnum bolt-action rifle rested on my shoulder. I fired not a bullet, but a quick photo of the oncoming hussy.

  A RIFLE TRIFECTA
And Gotta Have Kit
Dick Williams

Handguns are tools of convenience and wise handgun shooters will always carry them with this thought in mind: if needed, the handgun for personal defense might not end the problem unless it is applied with enthusiasm and skill. Some people — with whom I agree — believe opponents have killed some competent handgun shooters who had in fact shot the bad guy first; validating handguns aren’t always immediate fight stoppers.

TAFFIN TIPTOES INTO THE 21ST CENTURY
Polymer Pistol Style
John Taffin

When a man reaches my age, several things (some of which are unpleasant and unwanted) happen. Two things which seem to naturally occur are repeatedly repeating (repeating repeatedly?) and looking back at the past as something relatively perfect. After having spent some time in fear of saying the same things over and over again, or at least several times over several years, I have decided I don’t need this fear in my life so henceforth it will not be considered repetition but rather a running review. I don’t repeat myself — I review things often. I guess it’s the teacher in me.

  KNIVES FOR GUN GUYS
Tactical, Hunting And Safety Blades
Richard Mann

Most gun guys have a few things in common: they can’t hear and they like knives. I have carried a knife and a gun most of my life. When I was young it was a Barlow knife. I remember saving up for months then riding my bike down to the local sporting goods store in the rural community where I lived to buy my first Barlow.

I’ve spent the last few months looking at knives and selected two dozen that, if you will excuse the cliché, tripped my trigger. I also discovered something in the 2009 Spyderco catalog. Starting on page 73 there’s a section called EDGE-U-CATION containing five pages of knife facts that will make you one blade savvy individual.
