| When I first laid eyes on the Howa/Knoxx Axiom at SHOT, I wasn’t quite sure what it was. I found myself staring — I couldn’t take my eyes off of it. The Knoxx Stock with a free floated heavy barrel completely wrapped in a one of the coolest camo paint jobs made it quite the eye catcher. I knew it was a bolt gun, but this one was different. The Howa/Knoxx Axiom stared back, cammo’d-up, aggressive, and I felt my fingers itching. They do that sometimes. I scratched ‘em by picking the Howa up and was immediately impressed by three distinct things. The stock had a pistol grip — distinct thing number one. In place of the standard shoulder stock of most bolt guns, there was a collapsible (Knoxx) AR-type stock —number two. And distinct thing number three? Easy — it felt like no other bolt gun I’ve ever hefted, and is that a bad — or good — thing? Get the full story in the GUNS Magazine 2009 Special Edition Annual! >> Order Now << |

Several years ago, I was doing some exciting work in Amman, Jordan and I fell in love. My military employer was assigned to King Abdullah’s Private Offices and was a relative of the great King Hussein’s son and hand picked successor. Both past and present kings were and are warriors as well as enthusiastic shooters and extensive gun collectors. One of the perks connected with the work I did was the opportunity to shoot the latest in small arms weaponry from all over the world. Besides mainstream firearms, I was able to play with covert limited edition weaponry as well as unabashed cheap Chinese copies of our most popular firearms. As the United States military goes, so go American shooters, at least when it comes to cartridges. Four of the most popular cartridges today were all developed in the 20th century for military use. The .45 ACP was first chambered in John Browning’s Model 1905, which went through a series of improvements until it became the 1911 and both cartridge and pistol long ago achieved legendary status. The .30-06 began life as the .30-03 two years earlier. It was then slightly modified to become the “ought six” with a magnificent service record in the 1903 Springfield, the 1917 Enfield, the Garand, and the infamous/famous Browning Automatic Rifle. Air-to-air gunnery is the most difficult of all the ballistic arts. The ability to hit a fast target maneuvering in three dimensions has eluded generations of fliers, be they pilots or gunners. For anyone who has ever tried it, the initial results generally evoke a mixture of enthusiasm, enjoyment and frustration. Get the full story in the GUNS Magazine 2009 |

In the Time of the Ancient Ones, in the year of 1911, it came to pass that John Moses Browning and Colt brought forth a new and wonderful pistol, and it was christened for the year of its birth. And many of the righteous took it into battle on the side of Good, and soon there were many who said, “Yea, verily, this pistol is the Chosen One.” And they brought it forth to fight even greater Evil than before, and still its strong temper and its fire and thunder helped to defeat the Evil Ones.
